Greenwood District Recap

Our Greenwood District Project at Holmes Elementary was an absolute unforgettable day for everyone involved. This was a monumental day because the lack of financial literacy can lead to a number of pitfalls, such as accumulating unsustainable debt burdens, either through poor spending decisions or a lack of long-term preparation. This, in turn, can lead to poor credit, bankruptcy, housing foreclosure, or other negative consequences. This was a JA in Day initiative in collaboration with Junior Achievement of Southeast Michigan, Holmes Elementary School, Washtenaw My Brother’s Keeper, Our Community Reads, and Mentor2Youth. We thank everyone who supported this event. We received positive feedback from teachers at Holmes Elementary on how interested and active children of all grade level responded to the JA In A Day Lessons on financial literacy that can be viewed on our instagram and facebook!

For the first time ever we had an all African American group of volunteers. It is important for the youth to see people who look like them discuss the importance of financial literacy. Often in African American communities there is a lack of positive role models especially men. Our Greenwood District Project showed a strong sense of community collaboration that empowered the youth and promoted values, purpose, stewardship, community, and discipline. Our Raising Royalty the raising royalty curriculum and philosophy runs through all of the Mentor2Youth programs, providing a common language, positive shared experiences, and a working framework for our students.Raising Royalty helps our community build disciplined habits of purpose in areas of finance, civics, academics, and emotional intelligence. Using a holistic approach that includes guided conversations, activities, guest speakers, and chess play, the Kings and Queens in our programs learn how to play the game of life and thrive.
