What?

  • Promoting Developmental Assets is consistent with many of the values promoted by most faith communities, and modeling these values for young people is important. 

  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with young people helps nurture their spiritual growth. 

  • Faith communities provide many opportunities for young people to interact with others, particularly with those from other generations.

  • Faith communities can be important asset-building resources for youth in the community—both in their programs and activities as well as in their influence on many members who live and work in the community.

Why?

Constructive use of time is structured activities that stimulate positive growth and also contribute to the development of other assets: Support, Empowerment, Boundaries & Expectations, Constructive Use of Time, Commitment to Learning, Positive Values, Social Competencies, and Positive Identity

Congregations are places where young people may be bound together by a shared perspective and similar values.  The religious community provide young people with the opportunity  to be a part of an intergenerational community, which may not be possible in other settings.  Time spent in congregations is associated with Positive adaptation, increased sense of well-being, increased self-esteem, decreased delinquency, and lower levels of depression.
